JAKABY JADE (Royal Applause), a recent private purchase, wins the $100,000 Del Mar Juvenille Fillies Turf, on her stateside debut, for owners Slam Dunk Racing, Steve Keh and trainer Doug O'Neil. The two year old began her career campaigning in England for The Paddock Space Partnership II and trainer Jim Boyle. Seventh on debut in a five furlong dash at Windsor June 29, she improved to annex a maiden event over that same distance at Lingfield July 25. The juvenile skimmed the rail at the rear of the field, through fractions of :22.76 and :47.41. Inching closer as the pack condensed on the turn, Jakaby Jade rocketed through a narrow opening on the final turn and powered home to a convincing tally.
Doug O'Neil added 'When we worked her over the grass [bullet 4 furlongs in :48.60 four days ago] we were worried we might have overworked her. But she has adjusted to the U.S. very quickly and very well. We got a great ride from Flavien Prat getting through on the inside like he did.'
All being well Jakaby Jade will now point for another Listed race when racing resumes at Santa Anita before a probable tilt at the $1,000,000 Breeder's Cup Juvenille Fillies Turf (Grade I), to be run at Keeneland, October 30.
Jakaby Jade's win in this race adds to the victories of Clenor (2013) and She's Complete (2014), for Doug O'Neil, EBS, McCalmont Bloodstock and Jack Sisterson.
